ODL vs Conventional Mode of Delivery
Open and Distance Learning (ODL)

Flexible learning is implemented where students can take charge of self-learning based on guided learning with comprehensive learning materials, interactive activities, and periodic feedback that can be accessed 24/7 via the LMS in addition to scheduled synchronous meetings.
Conventional

The self-learning approach is less implemented. Instead, lecturers play an essential role in guiding student learning. Students need to attend classes or meetings with lecturers more often to obtain materials and gain knowledge for the courses followed
Open and Distance Learning (ODL)

There are no physical face-to-face meetings. Instead, they are replaced with synchronous sessions using Zoom, Google Meet, and Microsoft Teams.
Conventional

The number of hours for physical face-to-face meetings is typically around 42 hours per semester for a three-credit-hour course.
Open and Distance Learning (ODL)

Learning week: 12 weeks
Revision week: 1 week
Exam week: 1 week
(14 weeks + 14 weeks + 14 weeks = 1 year of study)
Semester break is about ten weeks in total.
Conventional

Long Semester :
Learning week: 14 weeks
Mid-semester break: 1 week
Revision week: 1 week
Exam week: 3 weeks
Short semester:
Learning week: 7 weeks
Revision week: none
Exam week: 1 week
Semester break is around 15 weeks in total, including mid-semester break.
Open and Distance Learning (ODL)

The total number of assignments given is tailored to the nature of ODL students, the majority of whom work and study simultaneously.
Conventional

The overall number of assignments is tailored to the nature of conventional students, most of whom study full-time on campus.
Open and Distance Learning (ODL)

Synchronous face-to-face meetings or synchronous tutorials are not as many as those in conventional programs.
Conventional

Physical (or virtual) face-to-face meetings are more frequent than those in ODL programs. Usually more than twice a week.
Open and Distance Learning (ODL)

Self-instructional material (SIM) is the main resource for ODL students, acting as a teacher. Students are given access to complete learning materials and interactive learning activities via the LMS once students register for the course
Conventional

Students rely on lecturers as a source to obtain the content of learning materials. Learning materials are not fully supplied at the beginning of the semester or after course registration.
